After five days of Tmall’s opening, Costco, the world’s second-largest retailer and the world’s seventh-largest retailer, announced its opening in Shanghai, the first store in mainland China, to open on August 27. Since the beginning of this year, China’s business super-sports have changed, and at this time, Costco has entered the Shura field.

Costco implements the membership model. Consumers need to pay membership fees in advance (formal price of 299 yuan) to become a member before they can enter the store. The paid membership model was first introduced to China in 1996 by Wal-Mart’s Sam’s Club. In the same period, it also entered Metro, Pulsmat, etc., but they experienced setbacks in the subsequent development, or canceled the paid membership system, or quit Chinese market. At present, only Sam’s member stores are still insisting on the paid membership system, and the membership fee is at least 260 yuan.

The question is, can mainland consumers who are spoiled by e-commerce accept the “paying money” before going to the supermarket?

Is there a chance for the store membership system

Costco, which has 770 stores worldwide, has always been a big, cost-effective product, with cement floors, large shelves, and large packaging… The store in Shanghai has continued its style.

According to the first financial quote from Costco, all the goods in the store are shipped in original pallets and displayed in a simple store environment, so that goods can be stored and transferred to the sales area more efficiently. In addition, the store is in a self-service mode, and the products purchased by the members are packed in empty cardboard boxes.

Costco’s stores in the United States are mostly located in suburbs with low land prices. This is due to the high car ownership in the United States and the driving on the weekends, but it is different in China. The floating population, single people, and family structure are small, and the demand for large-sized goods is not so large. Sam’s member store has been in China for 23 years and currently only has 26 stores.

Costco North America has four membership fees, the cheapest is $60, or about $400. The Shanghai store charges 299 yuan, compared with the 260 yuan annual membership fee of Sam members, Costco’s membership fee has no advantage.
