Recently, the “Technical Trivia” of the old friend Right Army made a lot of discussion on the two articles. One of them said that “BAT employees are not qualified to go to small companies”, and the other is “the full-stack technical director of small companies went to large companies to get frustrated.” It seems that no matter whether you work for a big company or a small company, you can’t make a guarantee for your career, and you can’t be a gold-plated sign for job hunting.

So, big companies or small companies, what is the relationship with career? If you have expectations for your next job, do you want to be particularly important to a major company or a small company?

My answer is: This kind of big problem, if you want to find a simple answer, it must be futile. If you can’t do a detailed analysis of fine-grained, the conclusion is mostly untenable.

How do you perform fine-grained analysis? Simply put, at least it can be discussed in four situations:

  • What kind of big company employees do small companies like?

  • What kind of big company employees do small companies don’t like?

  • What kind of small company employees do big companies don’t like?

  • What kind of small company employees do big companies like?

Exactly, I have basically observed these four situations in close quarters. I will talk about them in detail below.

What kind of big company employees do small companies like?

Small companies want to introduce employees of large companies. There are several points that are generally valued:

The first is professional ability. He can work in a large company. Most of them have already explained that this person has considerable technical ability. The evaluation of the ranks of several large companies has become the universally recognized standard. With these ready-made information, Small companies can eliminate the cost of evaluating trials from scratch. For the leaders of many small companies, “coming two Ali P8” and “coming a Tencent T3.2” is a great news.

Second is experience. The business that big companies have to face is often more complicated, at least in terms of scale. The employees of large companies have accumulated a lot of experience in this process, saving the small companies from scratching their heads.

The most typical example is search. For a long time, Baidu has been the leader of the domestic Internet industry search. Even if Baidu’s technology is not perfect, other companies simply have no chance to face and solve Baidu’s complex and so many levels of search. Problems, naturally, do not have those experiences.

So to do a search, directly recruit a Baidu engineer can take a lot of detours (more to say, although I do not agree with Baidu’s business ideas, But it must be admitted that the technical literacy of many Baidu engineers is very good).

For example, information flow and recommendation, today’s headlines are basically in a position of ridicule. The huge user advantage determines that the similar business of other companies is basically the experience of repeatedly exploring today’s headlines. So if a small company wants to do search and recommendation, the heads of the person may be very troublesome – of course, the headlines are said to be not so good.

The third is process and normative awareness. The processes and specifications of large companies are better than those of small companies. Therefore, whether it is professional work or writing emails or plans, employees of large companies usually have good professional habits and can indirectly drive small The company’s institutional culture.

I have seen many examples of this myself: the technical team of many small companies is the grass-roots team. Many backbones don’t even know the emails. After the email is sent, they have to call to explain for a long time. The stock is hard. After the employees of the big company joined, not only the communication was clear and decent, but also the process planning, division of labor map, accident handling plan, etc., which springed up like a mushroom. Even if the boss did not understand the profession, he could understand that this is a good thing. Exaggerated, even the mail and meeting agendas of large company employees have been set as templates, requiring employees throughout the company to learn.

In this case, what kind of small company employees will be welcomed by big companies?

If you are from a small company, but the ability to coordinate is extremely strong, and you are not afraid of obstacles such as teams and departments, you can always get things running smoothly. This ability must be appreciated by big companies. Large companies often have extremely thick “department walls”. It is difficult to promote cross-departmental collaboration. Anyone’s coordination ability must be discounted. However, large companies often have many places that need to be flexibly coordinated and cannot be driven by mechanisms. People from small companies have an advantage in this regard.

I joined the big company for the first time many years ago, and I was taken aback by the standardized interview process. Finally, HR asked me: Can you describe your work quality with one thing?

The word “work quality” is the first time I heard it. It probably has nothing to do with the specific technology. So I gave an example that has nothing to do with technology: I once had a mistake in the configuration of the program that we contacted Sina blog. The server was blocked by the other party because of excessive frequent access to the Sina blog. My solution was not to find an agent, but to change the configuration and call to explain the situation and request to unblock it. Sina is a big company, the process is particularly troublesome. I switched to dozens of calls, finally found the person directly responsible, and issued several documents as required, and finally solved the problem satisfactorily.

After finishing the story, the HR, which has a dull expression, is gently raised. After that, I successfully got the Offer (of course, I also admit that I have been in the big company for a long time, and my thinking is very easy to get on the body).

Or, if you are from a small company, facing the same business as a big company, instead of copying the solution of a big company, or reinventing the wheel, you will come up with a better solution by thinking and prove that you have A strong ability to solve problems, this kind of talent is also welcomed by big companies.

When I was in a big company, I had encountered such a front-end technical candidate from a small company. Although he is not a big company, he always pays attention to the technological progress of large companies. He has his own unique insights into the industry’s popular front-end frameworks and solutions. The analysis of advantages and disadvantages is quite in place.

And, he didn’t just copy the big company’s framework, but made it customized according to the company’s actual situation – although this customization looks a bit “earth”I can see my situation more clearly, and I will be more confident in the future.
