Among them, Amazon shipped 10.4 million smart speakers in the third quarter, accounting for 36.6% of the market share this quarter, a significant increase of 65.9% from the 6.3 million units (31.9%) in the third quarter of 2018. Amazon’s shipments make it far ahead of other competitors.

Alibaba shipped 3.9 million smart speakers in the third quarter, accounting for 13.6% of the market, up 77.6% from the third quarter of last year.

Baidu has performed strongly in smart speakers this year. In the third quarter, its smart speaker shipments reached 3.7 million units, accounting for 13.1% market share, ranking third. It is worth noting that Baidu’s speaker increased by 290.1% in the third quarter, the fastest growth rate among the top five smart speaker brands. In the last quarter, Baidu’s shipments reached 4.5 million units, second only to Amazon, which was 37 times higher than the same period last year.

Google’s smartphone shipments in the third quarter were 3.5 million units, down 40.1% from the same period last year. Xiaomi’s smart speaker shipments were 3.4 million units, an increase of 77.7% from the third quarter of last year.

Canalys senior analyst Jason Low attributes Amazon’s outstanding performance to its recently launched Echo upgrade program, whichThe plan allows users to trade old Echo or non-Echo Bluetooth speakers to new models at a discounted price. He added that Alibaba’s Tmall Elf equipment may perform well, in part because Alibaba’s cooperation with Starbucks, Budweiser, Abbott, Oreo and other brands distinguishes them from Baidu and Xiaomi’s products.

For Baidu, although the smart speaker shipments are comparable to competitors, its DuerOS natural language platform is still exponentially growing. It is understood that DuerOS recently installed more than 400 million, and voice queries reached 3.6 billion times (up from 150 million in November last year and 100 million in August last year).

In April of this year, Canalys predicted that by the end of this year, the total number of devices in the global smart speaker market will exceed 200 million units. Assuming the expected implementation, this will double the total number of 114 million devices in 2018. Specifically, Canalys expects the US to maintain its current leading position, but sales in China, South Korea and Japan will increase by 166%, 132% and 131% respectively. Elsewhere, the company expects the Canadian smart speaker market to grow by 80%, followed by Germany with a 49% increase and the UK with a 47% increase.
