What is the “communication project”

Communication Engineering, the full English name is Communication Engineering, is an important basic discipline of engineering.

According to the Ministry of Education’s Measures for the Establishment and Management of Subject Catalogues and Talent Cultivation Disciplines, “Communication Engineering” belongs to the second-level discipline and falls under the “Information and Communication Engineering” first-level discipline.

The same class of disciplines includes electronic information engineering, telecommunications engineering, information engineering, software engineering, network engineering, electronic science and technology, optoelectronic information engineering, electrical information engineering, and Internet of Things engineering.

The research direction of communication engineering is communication. The essence of communication is the intercommunication of information. That is to say, communication engineering mainly studies the generation, sending and receiving of signals, the transmission, exchange and processing of information.

In the foreign (for example, the United States) subject classification, communication engineering is considered to be an important branch of electronic engineering.

Electronic engineering, that is, EE, which is often heard of, is related to telecommunications, telecommunications, electronics, optoelectronics, and integrated circuits. Another Electric Engineering is electrical engineering, mainly related to strong electricity.

Corresponding to EE is CS, Computer Science (Computer Science).

CS research direction, including computer systems, algorithms, artificial intelligence, data storage technology, software engineering, human-computer interaction, etc.

Simply put, EE is based on hardware and low-level implementation, while CS is based on software and high-level application.

Over the years, EE and CS have always had a “competitive” relationship. The result of the competition is that CS has the upper hand, which has a lot to do with the development trend of the industry, which we will mention later.

What exactly does “communication engineering” learn?

Let’s take a look at the curriculum of communication engineering.

Communication engineering is a typical interdisciplinary major, integrating modern electronic technology, information technology, and communication technology. Therefore, the course content is particularly “rich”:

The curriculum of domestic universities is simply powerless. Regardless of whether it is useful or useless, it has nothing to do with it. Anyway, as long as you touch the edges, you will be arranged, and you can make up nearly 200 credits.

The courses in the above picture are mainly divided into subject basic courses, professional compulsory courses, and professional elective courses. From the direction of view, it is five categories: software, hardware, wireless, network, and optical.

Software: Is programming, writing code. The key courses are data structure, introduction to software engineering, software project management, and the development of programming languages such as C/C++, java, and python.

Hardware: Mainly digital electronics, analog electronics, high-frequency electronic circuits, signals and systems, digital signal processing, embedded development, single chip computers, etc. Further forward are microelectronics, semiconductors, and integrated circuits. There is no pure hardware now, it is all software-driven hardware, combining soft and hard. So, hardware major = hardware + software.

Wireless class: This is actually an authentic “communication project”, specializing in the biggest bottleneck in communication-wireless air interface (Air Interface). Simply put, the wireless air interface is to study how to transmit data faster and better through wireless electromagnetic waves. Its key courses are signals and systems, digital signal processing, electromagnetic fields and waves, communication principles, information theory and coding. The wireless class is no less difficult than the hardware class. They are all hair loss courses.

Network category: Network engineering is mainly to study routing and switching, and deal with data communication equipment such as routers, switches, and firewalls. In addition to the data network, the network category actually includes the knowledge of the system category, that is, dealing with operating systems and databases, and further, the direction of cloud computing and big data. This piece, like software, is biased towards IT applications. The advantage is that it does not require any knowledge of digital signal processing.

The last category is light. There are many optoelectronic related majors in China, such as optoelectronic information engineering. In addition to studying optics (lenses, lenses, lasers), there are many researches in the field of optical communications. To put it bluntly, it is fiber optic communications. This is an important field of communication transmission network. The main courses are physical optics, applied optics, information optics, photoelectric detection, laser principle, etc.

No one can fully grasp the above five categories of directions, and there is no need to learn all. However, domestic colleges and universities particularly like duck-feeding, and they will choose a large number of courses from them according to their “preferences” as the syllabus of communication engineering.

So, the vast majority of students end up swallowing dates, learning everything, and not learning anything.

On the contrary, there are some very practical courses, such as project management, engineering specifications, project budget, etc., which are very practical in practical work, but are neglected in the teaching plan.

If you don’t want to be biased, you should evaluate yourself in your freshman year, which direction you like and which direction is suitable, and then work hard in this direction. Unless you take the postgraduate entrance exam, otherwise, you should learn to give up if you should give up.

About the basic ability that communication engineering should cultivate, you can see here:

After studying communication engineering for four years, will you do nothing? What should students of communication majors learn?

What are the good universities for studying “communication engineering”?

Next, let’s see which schools have stronger communications.

In this era, any university must have departments related to computer and electronic information engineering, and must also have a major in computer or communications.

Not only that, the scores of these majors are still very high, generally students with better grades are eligible to enter these majors to study.

For communication engineering majors, top comprehensive universities in China like Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University are definitely strong, and of course their scores are high.

In the universities of science and technology, such as Southeast University, National University of Defense Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, they also have considerable strength in communications.
