In the 4G era, MediaTek, which is gloomy in the field of high-end chips, has bet on 5G.

On November 26, MediaTek officially released its first 5G processing platform, the Teana 1000 (code MT6889). In fact, this chip has been warmed up for half a year, but the specific parameters and positioning have not been completely clear. MediaTek did not let the market wait. From the perspective of various technical indicators, this new chip with a new name has come up with a very high level.

The structure of the 5G chip market suddenly becomes a bit subtle.

Various first, the specifications are beautiful

MediaTek suddenly took a big, new Teana 1000, and came up with a very high standard in various specifications.

In terms of processing performance, Teana 1000 uses a combination of four 2.6GHz Cortex-A77 large cores and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 small cores. Compared with the previous generation, the performance is improved by 20%. GPU is currently the most popular version of Mali. The strong 9-core Mali G77 has a 40% increase in performance compared to the previous generation; the new APU architecture, 2 large cores + 3 small cores + 1 tiny core, has a performance improvement of 2.5 times and a 40% increase in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation.

Cortex-A77 is a new-generation mobile CPU architecture officially launched by ARM in May this year. At the same frequency, it will have a performance improvement of about 20% compared to the previous generation A76.

The Kirin 990, another dual-mode 5G flagship chip currently on the market, was launched earlier and failed to catch the A77 ride-hailer. This gave MediaTek a chance to counterattack.

Thanks to more powerful configuration, AnTuTu broke through 510,000 points, Zurich AI scored 56,000+, no doubt they are currently the highest. For comparison, the Kirin 990 5G version of AnTuTu scored 480,000, and Zurich Ai ran 52,000.

In terms of RF performance, the performance of the Teana 1000 is also strong enough.

MediaTek has implemented 5G dual carrier aggregation on the Teana 1000, which can be connected to two frequency bands at one time. According to official data, under the Sub-6 frequency band, the Teana 1000 can achieve a 4.7Gbps downlink rate and 2.5 The uplink rate of Gbps is still compared with Kirin 990. Its data is 2.3 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream.

Teana 1000 supports SA + NSA dual-module network, and supports the generation of 2G to 5G cellular network connections. It is also the first chip in the world to support 5G dual-card dual-standby (that is, 5G + 5G online at the same time); the latest chip Wi-Fi 6 standard, throughput is over 1Gbps, supports the latest Bluetooth 5.1+ standard, dual-frequency GNSS positioning system …

In terms of other performance, Teana 1000 is equipped with the world ’s first five-core image signal processor (ISP), which can achieve 24fps at 4MP, 4K @ 60fps, support 4-channel LPDDR4x memory, up to 16GB, etc. Wait. It also supports 120Hz FHD + display and 90Hz 2K + display.

Judging from the paper parameters, it is really not very picky.

Whether it is the processor or the connection performance, it is the current top level. The test today is actually the chip design and manufacturing capabilities of MediaTek.

Can the 7nm process cope with the heat and power consumption of the A77 large core to continue to provide high performance? From the parameters, we can also see some trade-offs of MediaTek, such as the main frequency, considering the Teana 1000 for energy efficiency ratio is limited to 2.6Ghz, which does not provide peak performance.

“Tianyu” is one of the Seven Stars of the Big Dipper. According to legend, Tianyu is the star of wealth. It can be seen from this naming that MediaTek really hopes to use it to fight a turnaround.

However, although the Teana 1000 is more powerful than the existing competitors, it has a “Tianji horse racing” feeling. After all, this chip will not be available until the end of the year. Specific products will not be available until the first quarter of next year.

Stand over by it?

Under the 4G era, MediaTek has been unsatisfactory. Several attempts to enter the high-end have failed. It can only grab the market share of the thousand yuan machine and be “disgusted” by consumers.

With the maturity of dual-mode 5G, MediaTek chose to lock in advance and launched its flagship chip instead of the mid-range positioning as previously rumored. Compared with the 9-series products of friends and merchants, MediaTek also named it to 1000 at once, and got rid of the naming method that has not been continual in the past. For MediaTek, this is a new beginning.

MediaTek has written down on the Teana 1000. In the third quarter earnings report released at the end of October
