In the 1980s, Li Zongsheng wrote a song called “The Race with Himself”:

Dear Landy, my brother

You rarely win others but this time you surpass yourself

Although when you leave school

Everyone thinks you won’t make a profit

You have n’t complained about it because you violently gave up

People need a little stimulation sometimes

The most common thing is your girlfriend leaving you

Sometimes people need a little hit

You and I have been repeated more than once

This song, written for one person, was included in his ten albums before and after Li Zongsheng.

At the time, he was working as a production manager at Rolling Stone and was in the golden age of music.

This song is written for a colleague, the company’s planning manager.

This person is Landy-Zhang Peiren.

Zhang Peiren is an old literary youth. He had organized the first rock music festival and the first rock performance in Taiwan as early as high school.

In order to run a bigger show, and the funds were not enough, he and his team had to sell blood.

A girl was so fat that she couldn’t find the blood vessels several times and she cried. Zhang Peiren told her:

For ideals, stick to it!

However, as Taiwan ’s politics is lifted, foreign cultures are pouring into this closed island.

At the same time as opening the horizon, it also broke the original competition. In Zhang Peiren’s words:

Everyone hears and sees things outside, and compares them with local things. After a period of time, our original cultural competitiveness in a quiet environment has begun to break off from that moment.

Looking ahead, Taiwan has only love songs and idols, and its aesthetics are too singular.

Cui Jian’s throat in 1986 made Zhang Peiren notice the mainland on the other side.

He noticed that Beijing has a force that is quietly brewing and is about to emerge.

In 1990, Zhang Peiren persuaded Rolling Stone Records to set up a branch in Beijing in an attempt to discover the new music power here.

At the cost, he mortgaged his house in Taipei.

Like the Hongkong Jinshi Records, the name of the Beijing branch is also related to the stone, which is called Magic Rock Culture. The first band signed was the Tang Dynasty.

While still at Rolling Stone Headquarters, Zhang Peiren chatted with Chen Sheng once:

Why not put those songs that we can’t fit into any album on a record?

Can you just make your favorite music in this record without considering making money?

At the time, there were a lot of bands in Beijing, but they had no experience, and they couldn’t get enough mature works for an album.

In that era, many excellent independent music saw light through this compilation.

Some of them have become great gods in the future, and some have been called “old guns” by later generations. Some are short-lived, as soon as they get up, they come to the end.

It looks like the fate of Chinese rock music.

There is a band in the compilation, and the average age was only sixteen or seven. Two of the core members must also be apprentices to Tang Ju, a bass player named Zhang Ju.

One is Deng Yingge and the other is Ou Yang.

On the day the band was founded, they thought of their names at Zhang Ju’s house together. Zhang Ju joked:

You call it “ugly face”.

They’re not angry and they feel pretty cool. Well, rock music is hard, it’s useless to be so beautiful.

As a result, the organizer changed the name for the first performance, leaving only “faces”.

This song in the compilation is one of the representative works of the face band-“Give me a little love”.

Deng Yingge (first from left) and Ou Yang (second from left) are not really ugly.
