Beijing time on December 4th, Google co-founder Larry Page [span class = “text-remarks” label = “Remarks”> (Larry Page) announced on Tuesday that he will no longer As CEO of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, hand this position to Google CEO Sandal Pichai (Sundar Pichai) . At the same time, Google co-founder Sergey Brin (Sergey Brin) also announced that he will step down as president of Alphabet and no longer serve as president.

The following is the full farewell letter of Page and Brin:

We published the first founder’s open letter in the S-1 listing prospectus filed in 2004, beginning with this:

Google is not a traditional company, and we don’t plan to be one of them. Looking at Google’s history as a privately held company, we manage this company in different ways .We also focus on a creative and challenging atmosphere that helps us provide fair, accurate and free information to users around the world. “

Today, we believe these core tenets are still true and applicable. Google is not a traditional company and will continue to make ambitious bets on new technologies, especially under our Alphabet structure. Creativity and challenges are always there, only a few more, and they are increasingly evident in many areas such as machine learning, energy efficiency, and mobility. Nonetheless, Google’s core service-providing fair, accurate and free access toInformation-still the top priority for the company.

However, since we published our first founder open letter, the company has grown and matured. Within Google, many popular consumer services have emerged following searches, such as maps, photo albums, and YouTube; our Android and Chrome platforms drive a global device ecosystem, including our own Google-manufactured devices; Google cloud computing, including Google Cloud Platform, G Suite enterprise collaboration tools. Of course, there are basic technology platforms built around machine learning, cloud computing, and software engineering. We are honored that these products can become an important part of the lives of billions of people. It’s a trust and responsibility, and Google is always striving to deliver.

Structurally speaking, Google reorganized into Alphabet in 2015. As we wrote in the founder’s open letter in 2015, “Alphabet aims to achieve business success through strong leadership and independent operations of subsidiaries” .

Hundreds of Phoenix residents have been traveling in Waymo’s self-driving cars since then, and many have no drivers. Wing has become the first drone company to engage in commercial delivery in the United States. Verily and Calico have a lot of great collaborations with other healthcare companies and are doing important work. Some of our “other businesses” have independent boards, including independent directors and outside investors.

These are just a few of the technology companies we set up under the Alphabet structure, as well as our investment subsidiary Google Ventures, a growth equity investment fund Capital G, and they have invested in hundreds of companies. Coupled with all of Google’s services, we have woven a gorgeous technology investment tapestry in all walks of life, all with the goal of helping people to meet major challenges.

The beginning of our second founder’s open letter was this:

“Google was born in 1998. If you compare Google to a person, it should have started elementary school by the end of last summer, and it has now completed its first grade.”

It’s 2019, and the company is a 21-year-old “young man” and it’s time to leave home. Although it is a huge privilege to participate in the company’s daily management for such a long time, we believe that it is time to play the role of proud parents and provide advice and care to the company, rather than the daily “chuck”.

With Alphabet now entering a stable development period, Google and other industriesTo effectively operate as an independent company, it is natural to simplify our management structure. When we think there is a better way to run a company, we never rely on management positions. Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and one president. Next, Pichai will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet, who will lead Google and manage Alphabet’s investment in other businesses. We are firmly committed to the long-term development of Google and Alphabet, and will continue to actively participate in the company’s affairs as directors, shareholders and co-founders.

In addition, we plan to have regular discussions with Pichai, especially on topics that make us passionate. Every day, Pichai brings humility and deep love for technology to our users, partners, and employees. Pichai has worked closely with us for 15 years during the establishment of Alphabet, as the CEO of Google and as a director of Alphabet. He acknowledged our confidence in the structural value of Alphabet, and provided us with the ability to deal with major challenges through technology. He is the most trusted candidate since Alphabet was founded, and is best suited to lead Google and Alphabet into the future.

Google has grown from a small research project to a source of billions of people’s access to knowledge and empowerment. This bet made by our two Stanford students created many other technical bets. We can’t imagine that when we moved the server from the dormitory to the warehouse in 1998, it would start such an extraordinary journey.
