In 2003, SARS broke out on a large scale and spread worldwide. After nearly six months of epidemic prevention, SARS was finally controlled in the summer of 2003. According to data released by the World Health Organization, 349 people lost their lives in mainland China that year.

To this end, the State Council decided to establish a field infectious disease hospital in Xiaotangshan area, to centrally treat and manage all SARS patients in Beijing hospitals. Xiaotangshan SARS Hospital started construction on April 23, 2003, and was delivered to use on April 30.

Xiaotangshan SARS Hospital is a first-class infectious disease hospital. It was the world’s largest infectious disease hospital at the time and also set a record for the world’s hospital construction speed. The staff of the Publicity Department of the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said that strictly speaking, there is no such term as “Xiaotangshan SARS Hospital”. It was not a hospital at the beginning, but a temporary field medical service.

During the SARS period, Xiaotangshan Hospital received a total of 680 SARS patients, one tenth of the global cases and one seventh of the Chinese cases. In the end, SARS Xiaotangshan672 people were discharged from the hospital.
