Recently, the international standard certification organization TÜV NORD North Germany has issued Baidu with the IATF 16949: 2016 quality management system certification compliance certificate. This certification is the threshold for entry into the quality management system for parts supply chains of major global automakers. With Baidu Apollo, it has obtained supplier qualification for supplying to major global car companies.

IATF 16949 is a global standard for the quality management system of automotive parts and components. The IATF members of the standard-setting organization include the world’s major car manufacturers and the automotive industry and manufacturing associations in major markets such as BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat, and German cars Industry Association (VDA), Italian Automobile Manufacturers Association (ANFIA), French Vehicle Equipment Industry Federation (FIEV), American International Automobile Supervision Bureau (IAOB), British Automobile Manufacturers and Traders Association (SMMT), etc.

As of now, Baidu Apollo has obtained IATF 16949, ISO 26262, A-SPICE and other mainstream vehicle-level certifications through products such as autonomous driving kits, high-precision maps, and small-scale on-board OS. In addition to IATF 16949, A-SPICE (Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Assessment) and ISO 26262 (Road Vehicle Functional Safety International Standard Certification) are the current entry standards for the automotive electronics industry.

A senior practitioner in the autonomous driving industry told Future Auto Daily that the above certificate is of great significance for the mass production of autonomous driving. “Mass production must have this (certification).” Among them, ISO 26262 is the highest level of autonomous driving Vehicle regulation certification.

In 2018, Baidu Apollo obtained ISO 26262 certification, being the first Internet company in China to be certified. In February this year, Huawei’s MDC intelligent driving computing platform also obtained the above certification. Although the vehicle-level certification is in place, it does not mean that autonomous vehicles can be mass-produced. L3 and above autonomous vehicles are still limited by policies and regulations, road safety verification, and ethical judgment. However, the team of self-driving car suppliers is constantly expanding. After the technology is ready, the realization of autonomous driving may only be a step in the door.
