On June 16, INVISTA Nylon Chemical (China) Co., Ltd. held the groundbreaking ceremony of the adiponitrile production base in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. The new project has an annual production capacity of 400,000 tons and a total investment of more than US$1 billion (approximately RMB 7 billion). It is expected to be officially put into operation in 2022.

Adiponitrile is a key raw material for nylon 66, and its main application areas include automobiles, electronic materials, and electronic connectors. After the above project is completed, it will form an integrated integration with INVISTA’s existing hexamethylenediamine and polymer plants, and directly provide the Chinese market with key basic materials for the production of nylon 66 and other high-value products.

Li Kai, Vice President of Invista’s Nylon Intermediates Business in Asia Pacific, said, “This project will use INVISTA’s latest adiponitrile technology, which is an improvement over traditional methods. Production, lower energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase process stability and many other advantages. After the project is completed, Shanghai will have a complete industrial value chain from adiponitrile to high-performance polymers, and become the world’s largest nylon 66 comprehensive The location of the production base.”

Invida is one of the world’s largest integrated producers of chemical intermediates, polymers and fibers. Since 2014, INVISTA has invested more than US$600 million (approximately RMB 4 billion) in the layout of the nylon market in China, including a 215,000-ton hexamethylene diamine plant and 150,000 tons of nylon 66 polymer in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park factory. Currently, the company is also expanding polymer production capacity, which is expected to increase to 190,000 tons by the end of this year.

Ping An Securities Research Report shows that China’s nylon 66 consumption in 2018 was 520,000 tons, accounting for about 23% of global consumption. Driven by the downstream industry, the demand for nylon 66 in the Chinese market has grown steadily, with an average growth rate of 6% in the past five years. However, due to high technical barriers, its raw material, adiponitrile, is still completely dependent on imports in my country.

Before INVISTA, China Chemical Group and Qi Xiang Tengda and other companies jointly established Tianchen Qi Xiang New Material Co., Ltd., and began to build the first domestic 20 in August last year. The 10,000-ton adiponitrile industrial plant is expected to be officially put into operation in 2023. In December last year, Henan Xiaguang Polymer Materials Co., Ltd. and Swedish International Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. signed an agreement on an annual output of 50,000 tons of adiponitrile. The total investment of the project is 576 million yuan and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
