Why I made this film
I am Zhang Tongdao, the director of the documentary “The Hometown of Literature”. We have been shooting this film for two years and we have shot 6 writers in total: Mo Yan, Liu Zhenyun, Alai, Chi Zijian, Bi Feiyu and Jia Pingwa. What is recorded is not only their personal images, but also the scene where their literature takes place.
In November 2012, Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This was a shocking moment for me. Because I studied literature for 10 years, although I started documentary after graduation, I never let go of literature.
Chinese literature is very inferior in the 20th century, because we have experienced a language revolution. In the past, Chinese people wrote articles in classical Chinese, using a language like “Huan Chu Ji Shan Ye”. Now we have to use the language of ordinary people’s daily speech to write literature, can we still write classics? Can it create the glory of Tang poetry and Song Ci?
Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature
Mo Yan’s award is a proof of new literature. This moment is extremely important.
In addition, as a video worker, I have a sense of responsibility. I have always said that Lu Xun is my favorite modern writer. He lives in Shanghai, but we have not left a one-minute video of Lu Xun. After the husband’s death, so many people went to take pictures of his funeral, but no one took pictures of his life when his husband was healthy, and let Lu Xun read a passage of “The True Story of Ah Q” by himself.
I think this is negligent. We can no longer miss these outstanding contemporary writers. No matter how big or small a nation is, as long as she has a few outstanding writers, her culture will be passed down in the world for a long time.
I wanted to shoot Mo Yan the first time. But then I wanted to simply shoot a group, and Mo Yan was not alone.
Chi Zijian
6 writers, representing 6 cultural areas
There are many writers that can be photographed, but this time, I want to photograph people who have a hometown, especially the countryside, because the countryside is the most primitive hometown. Second, he/she wrote his hometown into literary works. Third, these literary landscapes are already very famous.
So the northern side began with Chi Zijian and recorded the culture of an alpine region like the Daxinganling.
