Here, like everyone else, I am just a witness. My life has become part of this event. I live here, with everything. ——S.A.Alexievich

At seven o’clock on January 16, 2020, there is more than a week before Chinese New Year’s Eve. The Spring Festival is in full swing. People from all over the country set off from their work places and embarked on a train to return home to celebrate the New Year. I sat on the G555 high-speed train from Beijing back to Yichang and talked to my parents: “I took a Dixie takeaway at Hankou Station and can be delivered to the high-speed rail. I am not hungry at night.” The train stopped in Wuhan one and a half hours ago. There are 70% fewer people in a car from Beijing West Railway Station. Most people get off at Hankou, Tianmen and Jingmen. No one in the car wore a mask. Every traveler who hopes to go home to celebrate the Chinese New Year does not know what Lunar New Year they will experience.

Quietness before the outbreak

On January 17, everything was calm and there were no signs of an outbreak. I went to visit my aunt’s house. The streets and neighbourhoods near her home were not disinfected, and temperature detection was not required for entry and exit. My cousin prepared disinfection products containing potassium persulfate for cats at home.

Five days later, this jar of disinfectant was moved from the depth of the storage cabinet to a prominent hand-washing table.

On January 18, family members finally started discussing the Wuhan epidemic. “What happened to the virus in the Wuhan South China market?” My father asked me while driving to visit my grandparents. “It is said to be under control, but now it has spread abroad. There are cases in Thailand and Japan.” I know no more than my father.

It’s a long way to see grandparents at Xunbaosi Village, Xiabaoping Town. The mountains of western Hubei are stacked, and the snow on the gloomy slope is still white. After entering the village, everything went smoothly, and the people in the village greeted each other the arrangements for the New Year.

On January 19th, the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth day of the lunar month, the international trade mall in the center of Yichang City was crowded. The news of an unexplained infectious disease in Wuhan has not stopped the city’s citizens from actively preparing for the Lunar New Year. My junior high school friend and I have been waiting in front of a restaurant for two hours. We are grateful that another friend, Xiao Zhang Layue, was able to return to Yichang from Chengdu. We happily planned to have a dinner together for the second month of the lunar month, watch a movie together on the first day of the first month, and go skiing in Shennongjia on the fourth day.

This plan has an abortion in two days. At the end of the month, Xiao Zhang finally decided to stay in Chengdu to welcome the New Year alone, along with the spicy beef noodles he snapped up in the supermarket.

Running more than ten pharmacies to buy masks

On January 20, the number of patients diagnosed with new-type coronavirus pneumonia in China increased sharply, and a total of 201 cases were confirmed in Wuhan, Guangdong, and Beijing. The epidemic came to my life overnight. “Remember to wear a mask, I put it on the shoe cabinet, and I want to wear it when I go out!” I repeatedly told the grandmother who was busy in the kitchen. I bought 3 packs of disposable medical masks at Longkang Road Pharmacy in Wujiagang District, Yichang. According to the clerk, this is the last three packs of masks in the store. When I gave these three packs of masks to my grandparents. “Nothing, no one wears it on the street.” Grandpa waved and did not answer. I walked for 5 minutes on the central city streets and saw one or two passers-by wearing N95 masks. They were all young people.

On January 21, the family finally began to discuss the issue of masks. Parents found 2 industrial protective N90 masks at home. At ten in the morning I put on a mask and went out to find a pharmacy to buy a mask.

Five pharmacies in Xiaoxita Street, Yiling District, Yichang City said that there was a shortage of masks, and they arrived at night. There were no medical surgical masks. The disposable medical masks arrived. Another 4 pharmacies have disposable medical masks. I bought a total of 70 masks from 4 pharmacies. The masks of several labor insurance stores have been sold out. One of the labor insurance shop owners said that the owner of an E-A license plate car bought an entire box of 3M masks an hour ago.

I walked for three kilometers on Xiaoxita Street. When I got home and took off my mask, I panted and lay down on the sofa for ten minutes. Few people wearing masks on the street not only did not alleviate my concerns, but also increased my tension.

I sat up and ordered two boxes of 50 N95 masks in Jingdong, an average of 4 yuan. Two hours after placing the order, JD.com was out of stock. Six days later, hospitals across the country released information on accepting social donations. One of the scarce resources was a mask that met the N95 standard.

22 official hotlines to inquire about the epidemic situation

On January 22, New Year’s Eve is getting closer. How to make Chinese New Year a top priority at home. I disinfected at home and suggested to cancel the New Year and go to the New Year.

A policeman in the father ’s winter swimming fitness group reminded everyone to pay attention to the epidemic situation and forwarded an internal notice: “Yichang has confirmed a suspected case (Female) , now in critical condition, the three hospitals have been identified as epidemic disposal hospitals. “One day later, the policeman said in the group,” Do n’t turn around, I may leak. “

At noon, I called the mayor’s hotline to inquire about the diagnosis of the new type of coronavirus pneumonia in Yichang. The mayor’s hotline said that no relevant notice had been received. The news from the official website of Yichang Health and Construction Commission shall prevail.

Two days later, in JanuaryOn the 24th, the official website of the Yichang City Health and Construction Commission released the first pneumonia epidemic report on new coronavirus infection, and announced one confirmed case. 16 suspected cases were found.

On January 23, the epidemic that had spread throughout the country did not stop our family’s original New Year family gathering plan. I wore a N95 mask to attend the grandparents’ new year party. Nearly 20 people gathered in the factory building, only I was wearing a mask.

“A relative who hasn’t seen you wants to see you, how can you wear a mask.” Aunt didn’t understand my behavior. “It’s really serious.” I remember that 444 people have been confirmed in Hubei this morning and updated. In the kitchen, my aunt was nervously preparing vegetables, and my cousin was walking around with her niece who was more than one year old. There were no protective measures such as masks and washing hands.

Looking at their calmness, nervous, I felt lonely and worried. The dinner was held for more than 3 hours, and I insisted on going home in advance. Before I left, I saw my cousin felt a black disposable mask and put it on.

I called the Yichang City Health and Construction Committee in the afternoon to inquire about the epidemic situation in Yichang. I got a reply and asked me to call the emergency command center to inquire about the situation. In the afternoon and evening of the same day, no one answered the emergency command center phone.

“Hurry up, really.” “Yichang has limited medical resources. Let’s go back to Beijing.” “You still have an interview in Beijing, leave as soon as possible.” I received the care and advice of friends from all over the place during dinner. Young people are nervous about the current epidemic.

Walk? Where can I go? How can I tell my parents? I was so anxious that I didn’t know which issue I should consider first. Twelve hours ago, in order to emphasize the seriousness of the incident to my grandfather, I told him that Wuhan would immediately block the city.

The epidemic situation really needs to be closed, but I can’t imagine the situation in Yichang. Blocking internal and external traffic means safety, and it also means guarding against dangerous tensions.

I told my parents, “I want to go a little bit, I will go in the next two days, and return to Beijing.” My parents didn’t say anything, and my grandparents didn’t say anything. The news channel on TV broadcast interviews with strained outbreaks and medical staff rushing to Wuhan.

“I’m going to bed.” Grandpa went into the bedroom and closed the door.

An hour later, my father said to me, “Either leave early, go back to Beijing to report to the hospital for quarantine.” “Yichang is also going to be sealed. I do n’t know when it will be closed. You can lift it away in Beijing earlier. “He added again.

I booked a flight from Ningbo to Beijing on the morning of the thirtieth day of the year. Direct flights have been sold out. I didn’t breathe a sigh of relief after I booked the flight, but fell into a more uneasy state.

I tell my friends about my mental state on WeChat. Am I infected? Is there no symptoms now? The immunity of parents and grandparents is worse. What should I do if it is infected? What should I do if I ca n’t go back to Yichang? My friend returned to me: “The physical condition of your family, your physical condition, looking for a job, and taking a graduation project, you need to sort the order.”

I sat in my bedroom with my cell phone for almost an hour and refunded my ticket. The next day my mother asked me while cooking, “Why do you want to refund your ticket?” I still couldn’t explain why.

In the early morning of January 24th, I called the office of Yichang Municipal Government to inquire about the notification of the new coronavirus in Yichang City, and replied that the authority to publish information was at the provincial level government. Provincial Health and Construction Commission turned busy tone after answering the phone.

At 11:00 on the same day, the outbreak was reported in Yichang City: As of 9 o’clock on January 24, there were 830 cases of infection, 177 cases of severe illness and 25 cases of death, including 24 cases of death in Hubei. There were 43 suspected cases in Yichang, including 37 in urban areas and 1 death.

“I’m leaving my relatives.” Grandpa received many New Year’s calls on the first day of the New Year, the most of which was this sentence.

In the early morning of January 25, I called the emergency command center of Yichang City to inquire about the confirmation progress and the distribution of districts and counties. I replied that it was not announced at this time. Please wait for notification. The New Years and Thirties pass quietly, and the night is quieter than the day.

On January 25, the first day of the year of the mouse, it was cloudy. “I’ll see if there is anyone outside.” Grandma who hadn’t left for two days looked downstairs, no pedestrians were walking on the road, and occasionally a motor vehicle passed by. CBD of Xiling District, YichangThere are many more people in the community supermarket. They wore cotton, medical and N95 masks and weighed vegetables quietly and quickly.

The seemingly peaceful residential area is dormant, and the sound of slingshots startles.
